In news that’s set to shock many, Sony Interactive Entertainment has just announced that PlayStation discs will be discontinued starting in January 2028. The company, which historically supported physical media, cited “shifting trends in consumer preference.”
What the discontinuation of PlayStation discs means for PS6
“As consumer preferences and the broader entertainment industry continue to shift away from physical discs to digital, physical game disc production for all new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will be discontinued starting January 2028,” Sony wrote. “Following this date, new games will be available on PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital formats only. This transition has no impact on games that already released, or will be releasing, prior to January 2028 in disc format.”
It has long been rumored that the PS6 will launch without a disc drive, but given this news, we’re guessing that there won’t be any next-gen disc drives at all. If that happens, it’s unclear what will become of PS5 discs that players own.
The PS5 supports PS4 discs, so the transition from last gen to current gen was relatively straightforward.
“This is a natural direction for Sony Interactive Entertainment to adapt to consumer trends as the general preference for digital media significantly outpaces physical discs,” Sony added. “This transition will enable us to align more closely with how most of our community prefers to access and play games today.”
