In a shocking development, Sony Interactive Entertainment has lost a highly anticipated PlayStation exclusive game to Xbox. Kojima Productions‘ promising Physint, which Sony announced in January 2024, is now likely to be an Xbox exclusive game after Microsoft stepped in to save the project.
PlayStation Studios under fire for dropping platform exclusive game Physint
In a vague statement published on PlayStation’s social media channels, Sony gave the impression that its decision to part ways with Hideo Kojima was mutual. However, in his statement, Kojima said that his studio “unexpectedly” received a notice from PlayStation Studios in mid-June, informing him of the decision to cancel Physint.
Kojima Productions subsequently spent several months finding a new partner, with Xbox CEO Asha Sharma stepping in to save the day.
As evidenced by the Community Notes under PlayStation’s tweet and fans’ response to the development, this is a terrible look for Sony. The timing doesn’t help, as the company is still under fire for its decision to end video game disc production in 2028.
There are understandably calls for PlayStation Studios boss Hermen Hulst to step down. However, these decisions go well beyond Hulst.
Sony’s modus operandi is to stay quiet in the face of backlash, but it’s high time the company started communicating with its fans beyond generic tweets and PlayStation Blog posts.
