Sony’s latest 40nm PS3s now available

As many of you know, Sony has reduced the size of the RSX from 90nm in the original PS3s to 65nm in the recently launched PlayStation slims. However, now that Sony has reduced the RSX even further to 40nm, not only will your blaster not run hot, but Sony will now be making a decent profit on every PlayStation 3 sold.

According to IGN.com, Sony’s latest internal redesign of the PlayStation 3 has finally begun shipping to retail locations in North America. Of course, rumor had it that the new RSX was already being featured in the ModNation Racer bundles released in Europe, but it’s hard to confirm if all consoles released in that bundle were 40nm or not.

If you’re one of those odd gamers who were waiting to purchase the cooler running PS3, make sure the console product number is “CECH-2101A.”

Good to know because my current 80gb backwards compatible PS3 has been acting strangely on me a few days ago… and as someone who runs the folding@home application practically daily, saving a bit on power and heat wouldn’t be a bad deal if my PS3 suddenly decides to give up on me. Nice Ratchet & Clank reference too! :p

  2. When (if) my Launch-ish 60gb PS3 dies I’ll be getting one of those.

  3. Sorry but the RSX is Nvidia’s and is made by TSMC

Sony has little say in the matter and the only reason it went to 65nm and now 40nm is because its saving Nvidia and TSMC money

  4. The PS3 runs fine, Sony needn’t do this. But it’s cool that they do.

  5. Yeah, my 80GB Phat barely ever over heats. I have left it on for days and it was still barely warm.

  6. Well I really need me one of those babies, because my 80GB backwards compatible one has died on me twice. Now I’m thinking about selling that and getting a new 40nm one, overheating is one of my biggest issues. And I thought only X360 had the RROD. PS3s YLOD has happened to me twice in 3 months! 🙁

  7. Alu, your machine has died of YLOD TWICE and you are thinking of selling it to someone else. Good thinking.
