Sony: 3D skepticism is comparable to Bluray

Sony’s worldwide studios vice president Scott Rohde recently discussed with Industry Gamers the comparable situation the company is in now with 3D that it once faced with Bluray upon launch. While there were many skeptics about changing media formats in 2006, there are even more now with the evolution of gaming and movie watching pushing towards this new technology of 3D.

“The best thing I can relate this to is the Blu-ray launch. I think this is like a rewind for me, a lot of the same questions, where people were saying, “I’ve got a huge DVD collection; why would I upgrade to a new type of media?” And someone has to push it out there to show it’s a superior technology and to show that it can achieve widespread adoption over time.”

I’m not going to sit here and tell you that 3D gaming is going to change everything or that you should run out and buy a 3D TV, but I will say if you enjoyed watching Avatar in 3D or any other movie for that matter, it truly is a great experience. It’s not for everyone, but it’s definitely a great way to play racing games (from past experiences) and check out movies.

  1. Well, I want to know more about the negative effects on the eye because of 3D.

  2. I just found that Samsung listed alot of health problems that can be caused by 3D. No thanks!

  3. I just found out that there are studies that show that playing videogames have no effect on the eyes whatsoever, they just get tired after a while.

Why should it be different with 3D?.

  4. Don’t ask me, ask Samsung: http://www.samsung.com/au/tv/warning.html

WOW… haven’t you ever looked inside game manuals for the psp or DS actually any game sytem for that matter. They all have similar warnings…only people who are really susceptible to seizures will get then.

    FACEPALM

  6. Final Fantasy Versus gameplay screenshots are out. The game looks beautiful.

  7. Well I will wait till more research is done on the area. Also I heard that it’s frequent that people get headaches by 3D. Why would I want to get a headache every time I play a game?

  8. 3D is gimmick and way too much with the 3D glasses which people might end up losing them or breaking them or whatever.

  9. 3D ain’t for me yet, I mean yeah you can buy a 3Dtv with like some glasses. But what happens when some of your buds come over and want to watch a 3d movie but you don’t have enough glasses… A decent pair of active shutter glass costs over 200$. So I would wait for a 3DTV that doesn’t require glasses… And that costs right now 20 000$…

  10. if you dont have enough 3D glasses, you can always watch the movie in 2D. Im gonna buy me a 3D tv soon if i can refrain from buying these ps3 games for a few months

  11. Everything that is good, is bad for you.

On the bright side we are all going to die, so enjoy those good things since avoiding them lands you in the ground anyways.

  12. Get rid of the glasses, then I will consider it.

im guessing people hate on the glasses because they are expensive.
(which i understand) But if your only reason for not wearing the glasses is because you think they look stupid then you have some serious issues lol.

I rather wear glasses than wave my hand like a Orangutan in heat…
    “cough…. kinect… cough”
    xD

  14. @Flight
    πŸ˜€ You made my day.

  15. Blu-Ray actually can improve games. 3D will not.

  16. I’m not a fan of motion controlled games (be it Wii, Kinect, or Move) and I’m not a fan of 3D. A occasional 3D movie is fine but gaming? No way.

  17. I was very skeptical till I got my hands on the products & tech first hand I will say it does Zap the mental energy you have if you play for more then an hour @ a time with out a break . And the glasses are way over price as of right now but the experience is very good even upscaled 2D to 3D is good your TV’s visual settings need to be tweaked as well in 3D mode . Click on my name to go to my youtube page to see a video I posted and for more 3D video new & reviews

  18. ok I fixed the link to my youtube on my name sorry for the mix up

  19. @TRF: Of course it could (and probably will). This is exactly what he’s talking about, many people didn’t think that bluray could do anything for videogames that dvds weren’t already doing.

Imagine playing a platformer like uncharted, where you actually can measure the distance between whatever you are jumping on. Imagine playing a racing game, where the depth of vision actually helps you driving and avoiding collisions in a much better way.

Thera are lots of possibilites for 3D, you just have to think outside the box.

Besides, you could argue that HD was just a gimmick too and yet, I would never go back to play in standard definition.

  20. Final Fantasy versus 13 is confirmed for tgs this year.
