What happens in the new The Alters Complete Edition trailer?

The Complete Edition trailer opens with Jan speaking to one of his Alters, entrusting him with the mission he has been carrying out. After showing what appear to be cutscenes from the game depicting Jan’s history, the trailer cuts to actual gameplay, which focuses on exploration, base-building, and solving a mystery on the planet.

The game is developed by 11 Bit Studios, known for popular games such as This War of Mine and Frostpunk. Tomasz Kisilewicz served as the game director and writer, with Katarzyna Tybinka and Magda Gamrot assisting him with the writing. The game was developed on Unreal Engine 5 and was initially released on June 13, 2025.

The official description for the Complete Edition reads, “Explore an emotional sci-fi game with a unique blend of survival, adventure, and base-building elements. Help Jan Dolski—the sole survivor of an ill-fated space expedition—create alternative versions of himself to escape a hostile planet and tackle personal turmoils with this unconventional crew. Complete Edition is inclusive of Last Variable DLC”

The game received positive reviews upon its initial release, but it also faced criticism over its use of LLMs in development. In response to the backlash, 11 Bit later stated, “AI-generated assets were used strictly as temporary WIPs during the development process.”
