Square Enix has had a troubling time this generation in producing quality products, especially within its key franchises on next generation consoles. Despite branching out and trying its hand at new roleplaying titles over the past four years, the developer/publisher has delivered average title after average title. Finally, with the release of Final Fantasy XIII, most SE supporters finally expected the company to get things right, but the game was met with a lot of criticism as well.
Despite these poor performances, Square Enix boss, Yoichi Wada, still has high hopes for two of the company’s largest franchises — Deus Ex and Final Fantasy. Speaking with MCV, Wada explained that if Deus Ex: Human Revolution goes as planned, the developer would like to take a ten year approach to the franchise and release several installment over the next decade. Wada also mentioned the same plan for Final Fantasy so long as there is franchise support.
“We have dozens of IPs, some of which we wish to build into franchises,” Square CEO Yoichi Wada told MCV. “Deus Ex 3, for example, is something we’re trying to revive. We want to keep on producing profit from that IP for the next ten years.
“Final Fantasy has always been a bread-earner for us. It has always been profitable. Of course, we would like to be expanding on those two key IPs [Final Fantasy and Deus Ex), and others that are very strong to us.
“We would like Final Fantasy to continue as long as there are the customers who support Final Fantasy.”
It should come as no surprise that Square Enix wishes to continue to push Final Fantasy titles out to the masses as it is the franchise that saved the company and put it on the map. However, SE has a lot of hard work ahead of itself if it plans on bringing the franchise back to the days of glory filled with FFVI-X. Hopefully the talented studio can pull in the reins and manage it, if not, I’ll be a very sad panda.
As much as I love FF, and as much as I loved Square (not Enix), I am on the edge of never buying a FF ever again. This article pretty much says that every game is going to have several spin-offs (ehem…FFXIII) and all their profitable franchises are going to be turned into effective cows for them to milk. Why not focus on making a REAL Final Fantasy instead of doing portable remakes, sucky new IPs and going multiplat? Everything Squaresoft did, has been undone by Square-Enix…Nomura, please release yourself from them and make your own studio. Really shameful Wada…you’re just the Japanese Kotick.
Oh and just a little heads-up Dave, you got a little typo at “…long as their is franchise support.”
Funny how they only mention how profitable it is. Anyways, I liked FFXIII, and hopefully Versus XIII will be good as well.
I’ll probably never play another FF again, and reading this has only made me more certain. Hell, the next Deus Ex game is probably the last SE game I’ll play.
Lol people need to calm down about Final Fantasy. If you don’t want them to try new things like FFXIII then go play FFVII on your PS One and leave the developers alone. They are trying.
