Gran Turismo 5 Eclipses 60 Million Lifetime

It’s no surprise or secret that the Gran Turismo franchise has been successful for a long time for Sony and Polyphony Digital. Throughout the years, Gran Turismo has always been the face of simulation racing on consoles and it’s way Sony afforded PD so much development time and funds with the 5th installment that released at the end of November.

Today, Sony and Polyphony revealed that Gran Turismo 5 has shipped roughly 5.5 million copies to retail on a worldwide scale. Why is this significant? Well, the fact the game has been out for a little over two weeks is astounding enough as it is, but when you consider that the franchise has eclipsed the 60 million shipped mark — it’s truly incredible.

Whether you like simulation racing or not, this is an impressive feat that commands respect and I have no doubt that 90%+ of developers out there would give anything to have a longstanding and successful franchise that mirrors that of PD’s Gran Turismo.

We’d like to congratulate the team at Sony and Polyphony Digital for eclipsing 60 million.
