Kitase: Move/Kinect may be good for mini-games in RPGs

I’m sure face palming is incoming with the recent comments from Final Fantasy boss Yoshinori Kitase as he hints towards potentially using PlayStation Move or Kinect within Square Enix’s RPGs in the form of mini-games. Why as mini-games? Well, that’s because he feels the technology is too awkward to enjoy throughout the entire RPG experience.

While it’s great that SE is wanting to utilize new technology, but has this company truly fallen this far out of touch with its fanbase that they honestly believe fans would encourage motion-controlled mini-games in their roleplaying games?

Speaking with Eurogamer, Kitase let his feelings be known about the motion tech coming up for both platforms.

“Obviously this [The 3rd Birthday] is a PSP title, so we couldn’t have made use of these new techniques anyway,” he said. “But it is quite awkward, particularly for example in Final Fantasy XIII, which came out last March in Europe. That kind of interface is quite difficult to be included in the RPG. But this is a gun shooter, and we would love to expand the franchise. In the future I think those technologies could be quite handy for us.

“The main difference between shooting games and RPGs – obviously there are some – but shooting games probably amount to up to 10 to 15 hours of gameplay. But an RPG, you have to improve your character fight and fight and fight, and then the ending, and then more to play with, that could be 40 to 50 hours. It’s quite continuous play, even though you don’t have one go, obviously. That kind of technique might not fit so well with a very continuous title that requires long gameplay.

“We could have a chance to introduce those techniques in a mini-game in those games, if you like, to give them additional spice.”

I can’t be alone in thinking that this would be a horrible idea, right? Would any of you approve of Square implementing motion controls in some fashion within your Final Fantasy or Star Ocean experiences? Do you think it would feel tacked on and more like a gimmick than anything else?

I agree with you David. I loved Final Fantasy XIII and wouldn’t want a gimmicky motion control minigame ruining my experience. This is exactly what they shoukdn’t do with motion controls.

  2. They should make a whole RPG that has motion controlls or make motion controls optional and include sixaxis controls (if needed) for the players prefering the usual controls.

  3. The only thing worse then the garbage there doing is how can a company that used to care and understand its fanbase go into a new generation and act like were idiots and want this nonesense. They were releasing quality title after quality title blowing your mind every time. They always stuck to there forumla while changing some things. Now they just milk everything they made in the past. (ff7 anyone?). I used to watch the versus trailer and it would draw out emotion, like another one of the greatest series of games was comming. Now im not even going to buy it, renting it at best. Why has this company changed so much? There has to be a reason.
