Media Molecule wants to define its own genre

Media Molecule pretty much invented the genre of Play. Create. Share with the release of their debut title this generation in LittleBigPlanet. With the sequel to that hit franchise ready to launch this Fall, Media Molecule is letting fans of the series know that they’re not only looking to take that next step, but to define the genre in a whole new way.

Speaking with Play-Mag, Mark Healey of Media Molecule reveals he “definitely feel that as a company what we should do is try and own that [Play, Create, Share] sphere.I’d like to think that stuff that we do going forward is in that realm.”

“We’ve got some really talented people here so we can do it and LBP has proved that there’s an appetite for it as well,” Healey insisted. “I’m looking forward to other stuff that we’ll be doing in the future. It’s just a case of persuading everyone else to be excited about it as well.”

It’s not unusual for a developer to tout its upcoming title in order to push anticipation for it, but when it comes to a creative studio like MM, it’s probably best to take their word for it. LittleBigPlanet 2 is surely going to define the genre just like the original and I can’t wait to get my hands on it.

  1. Well, with a game that lets you create your own game in almost any genre, I think Media Molecule has the “Play, Create, Share” genre to its own. How could any other developer compete?

  2. There will eventually be a game that can compete with lbp trust me…there will be something eventually…I’d like to see a lbp type game with humans/real weapons, etc.

  3. Really all they created was the ‘Share’ part. There have been plenty of games that let you make your own shooter/fighter/rpg, Media Molecule just put all of them together.

  4. its the only game i know that lets you create everything. games with map editors dont count. i hope that in the future somebody makes a shooter that lets you create everything because then i wont need to buy another shooter again!

did it really matter who did what. its a video game, enjoy it. no need to get caught up in all the details 😉
