Naughty Dog Feeling Pressured About Uncharted 3

The gaming industry has always been a result-based industry that has left the A.D.D. generation always asking, “What have you done for me lately?” It doesn’t matter if you have a long history of great titles, one bad title or subpar performance can easily make some forget about that long run of excellence. With Uncharted 3 officially unveiled Saturday night at the Spike TV Video Game Awards, Naughty Dog staffers revealed that the studio is definitely under “terrifying pressure” to deliver the goods on Uncharted 3.

ND’s cinematic animation lead, Josh Scherr, feels like the challenge to top last year’s Game of the Year a difficult one and something that is weighing on the team.

“There’s a lot more pressure now on us than I think there ever has been,” he said. “We want to meet and beat peoples’ expectations but frankly we’re just putting a lot of our own pressure on ourselves to do a better game than we did last time.”

Creative director Amy Hennig has also confirmed that she’s feeling the burn of expectations and knows there are high expectations both within and outside of the studio.

“Making Uncharted 3 there’s a ton of pressure – it’s a crushing amount of pressure to be honest,” she said. “Some of it’s self-imposed and some of it’s naturally imposed by the circumstances when you know you’ve got a big fanbase out there that’s waiting for any scrap of information and can’t wait for the next game.

“I’ll tell you, there’s something to be said for being under the radar and being the dark horse that nobody’s heard of yet.”

Hopefully the team behind Nathan Drake can get settled and focused without facing burnout or too much pressure. Obviously if the pressure weighs down enough, it’s going to effect the performance and outcome of the game itself. It should come as no surprise that most have already stamped Uncharted 3 as GOTY for 2011, but perhaps maybe we should let off the pedal in that regard and just enjoy everything we can learn as time passes.

Either way — I’m excited and most, if not all, of you are definitely amped for Uncharted 3. After all, it is less than a year away.

  1. I’m not worried. Even if it’s not as good as Uncharted, it’ll still be amazing.

I agree with TRF, Uncharted will always be good as long as ND makes them. (I just contributed to the pressure didn’t I?) Sorry ND there is no pressure.
