No more Commander Shepard after Mass Effect 3, but series will live on

In several months’ time we’ll see the thrilling conclusion to the Mass Effect trilogy, which Bioware says will also mark the end of Commander Shepard’s story. Series fans can rest easy, however, knowing that the Mass Effect universe will live on. When asked at Gamescom if ME3 was the end of the series, company CEO Dr. Ray Mazuka had the following to offer:

“Not at all no. We have ambitious plans to continue this franchise going forward. Mass Effect 3 is simultaneously a couple of different things; a thrilling and epic conclusion to the trilogy as we promised our fans we’d provide for Commander Shepard, but it’s also a brand new beginning – it’s an entry point for new fans and it’s also a brand new beginning.”

Good news for fans, indeed. With it’s ridiculously detailed and engrossing universe, the Mass Effect series can cover a number of different stories in a number of different genres, and even mediums — remember that anime movie that’s scheduled to hit sometime next year?

From here, it looks like ME’s best days are still ahead of it, and that excites the hell out of me.
