It should probably be pointed out that the title of the thread isn’t to indicate that Sony is closing in on Nintendo’s lifetime sales in Japan with the Nintendo Wii, but that Sony is making a strong push to be the market leader in 2010. Oddly enough, despite the third place finishing over the last handful of months in North America, Sony’s Japanese sales have been on the rise and steadily climbing to overtake the Wii.
As of this past week, the PlayStation 3 remains only 3,000 units behind the Nintendo’s Wii and over 800,000 units ahead of Microsoft’s 360. When you think of that sales gap between the 360 and PS3, it almost makes the North American differential pretty moot when it comes to yearly sales for 2010. It’s likely the two companies are closer to neck-an-neck than anything else.
Check out the Japanese figures below.
Japanese hardware, year-to-date (combined SKUs):
Wii – 1,000,482
PS3 – 997,187
Xbox 360 – 150,649
PS2 – 58,649
I’m not big on sales stats but to overtake the Wii in anything is a great accomplishment. Except in crappy mini games and useless motion controls. 😉

the thing is, this was to be expected, becuase the market for the wii is rapidly diminishing. nobody (ok some people) buys a wii twice. or any console for that matter. so when you have sold as much as the wii has the market becomes somewhat saturated. taking nothing away from the ps3 though, its still pretty impressive numbers, and the gap with the 360 overall is closing all the time.
Great news for Sony.
Definitely surprising news.
Thats good! now sony just need to get those damn americans to stop buying the xbox
Hey, I didn’t buy that dead Box 360
