4A Games is giving PS5 owners a new reason to revisit two of its beloved PS4-era first-person shooters. Announced earlier today, an upcoming Metro Redux Next-Gen Update will be deployed for free for owners of Metro 2033 Redux and Metro Last Light Redux on PlayStation and other platforms. The update will bring several visual and performance improvements.
The announcement arrives as the Metro franchise celebrates a massive milestone, having crossed 50 million sales worldwide. “It has been an incredible journey over the last two decades, and we could not be more proud of what the team has achieved or more grateful to the players who have walked these tunnels with us,” said Jon Bloch, Executive Producer at 4A Games.
“Our community has supported us from the very beginning; every milestone we reach belongs to them as much as to us. Returning to where it all began with the Next-Gen Update of Metro Redux – and bringing it to fans free of charge as we did with Metro Exodus – felt like the right way to continue to say thank you.”
What can players expect from the updates?
The next-gen update is not being billed as a remaster or remake. Instead, it preserves the original gameplay experience while enhancing various aspects. These include 4K textures, improved animation fidelity, higher-quality audio, and more environmental detail. Lighting, shadows, and particle effects are also getting improvements. The update also includes several bug fixes and quality-of-life improvements.
On PS5 and PS5 Pro, the update enables native support for console games. It also includes PSSR support for PS5 Pro owners. Console players can also play at 4K at 60fps, while those with supported displays can play at upscaled 4K at 120fps. PS5 owners will also get adaptive triggers on the DualSense controller. It also supports the Power Saver mode on PS5.
The Metro Redux Next-Gen Update launches on October 29, 2026, on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. It will arrive earlier on PC on October 22, 2026. Elsewhere, 4A Games will launch Metro 2039 on February 14, 2027, on PC and consoles.
