Sony Interactive Entertainment is testing new technology that would make PlayStation Store purchases easier than ever before. A September 2026-published Sony patent suggests that paying for games after the end of discs could be as simple as tapping a card on the PS6‘s controller.

First spotted by IGN, the patent titled “Video game controller-driven information transfer” specifically mentions technology with which “payment method information can be transmitted from a card such as a credit card or a gift card to the video game controller.”

Sony describes a scenario in which a console user is playing a video game and wishes to purchase microtransactions. Currently, that requires going to the PS Store, inputting payment information if it’s not already on file, and making a purchase before returning to the game.

However, with NFC-enabled controllers, all one would have to do is tap a PS Store gift card or their credit card on the controller and instantly make a purchase.

Patents don’t always come to fruition, but this idea isn’t far-fetched, especially as PlayStation transitions to a digital-only future. After all, we’re already using various contactless payment methods.

Whether this technology will be used in PS6 controllers remains to be seen.
