Riccitiello: Move/Kinect FPS Games Having to “Hide Behind Your Couch”

Kevin Butler has done his fair share of lambasting Microsoft’s Kinect for having to shout out “pew! pew! pew!” while playing first-person shooters, however, now it would appear that Electronic Arts CEO John Riccitiello is ready to take aim (with his finger) at PlayStation Move and Kinect as well.

Speaking with IndustryGamers, Riccitiello describes how it’s “very hard to imagine” playing a FPS title in the future and “hiding behind your couch” while “making a gun out of your finger.” To be honest, I laughed pretty hard at the thought of watching a family next door in their living room couch diving while playing the latest shooting game on the market.

“I’ve had a number of people ask me, ‘Will gesture-based gaming replace controllers?'” Riccitiello told IndustryGamers.

“I don’t think so.

“There will be genres where the gesture-based gaming, however delivered (Kinect, Move or any other device that comes down the road), will actually be the superior way to play: dance games, music games, exercise games. It’s really hard to imagine [playing] an exercise game with your thumbs.”

And, he added: “It’s really hard to imagine that I’m going to play a future edition of Medal of Honor, or Call of Duty, or Battlefield, hiding behind my couch, making a gun out of my finger. I’ve tried driving with gesture-based controls; I don’t really like it.”

Regardless of which side you stand on in the motion gaming wars, it’s hard not to laugh at the notions mentioned above. Frankly, I enjoy using my controller when gaming and just relaxing, but I fully plan on checking out Killzone 3 with PlayStation Move support. Are there any controller-based titles you’re looking forward to using Move with instead?

  1. I sugest every game make’it optional and not an obligation to play the game so everyone is happy how they chose to play

Sounds like he played Kinect, which is flawed to begin with. If the technology were more accurate, it would be good, but its accuracy really sucks compared to the Move. Sometimes I can’t tell if the game is glitching badly or the camera is just terrible at picking up motions at times.
