Sony has announced a stunning new PS5 console, but it’s failing to spark celebrations among fans. The PlayStation 5 is arriving soon in black.
An exclusive PlayStation 5 Digital Edition Midnight Black will launch on November 19, 2026. It’s the first time Sony Interactive Entertainment has unveiled an official black variant besides the standard white model.
The new PS5 console supports PS5’s ultra-fast SSD, 3D audio, and PlayStation 4. Users can enjoy the device’s black design for a coordinated look with other console accessories, such as the PlayStation Portal remote player.
Why aren’t fans happy about the new PlayStation 5 console?
Despite its gorgeous looks, the PS5 Digital Edition Midnight Black console hasn’t impressed most fans. The new device is limited to use in Japan. This means players outside the country can’t get it or play games on it because it’s region-locked.
An official blog for the new PlayStation console confirms that it will be only “available on PlayStation accounts with the console language set to Japanese and the Country/Region set to Japan.”
As a result, fans have expressed disappointment on social media. On Reddit, one user, RealPhilosophy319, pointed out that with the Digital Edition Japan-only model, “you can’t even change the language nor use a non-Japanese account.” Another fan, Not_Real_Batman, echoed those sentiments and wrote, “I looked it up, and it’s region locked and also language locked at Japanese, so you can’t switch it to anything else.”
Some fans are also upset that Sony never released a standard black PS5. They are wondering why the new variant is only exclusive to Japan. On ResetEra, a user wrote, “Should have been the standard color tbh.” Another fan raised the issue while urging the manufacturer to launch a black PS5 “worldwide. Don’t even have to make that many.”
Besides the digital edition, Sony will also release a PlayStation Midnight black disc drive model on November 19, 2026. It will also be exclusive to Japanese users.
