Sony beats Microsoft in world wide sales for 2009

Today, the NPD has released its sales figures not only for the month of December, but for the entire year as well. Thankfully for Sony, not only was the company able to outsell its main competitor in the month of December, but it more than likely destroyed the competition in terms of world wide sales for the entire year of 2009.

As the NPD rolled out, it was announced that the PlayStation 3 had sold 1.36 Million consoles in the United States alone. This figure was 50K higher than the Xbox 360 as Sony steamrolled over the 360. However, while Microsoft did outsell Sony for the year in the United States by roughly 400K, that number isn’t nearly high enough for the 360 to make up for the millions of consoles Sony sold in Japan in comparison to Microsoft.

We’ve included an image below courtesy of NeoGAF.

The world wide figures for the year are estimated to be at roughly 12.8 Million for the PlayStation 3 and 10.4 Million for the Xbox 360. Of course, these are rough estimates only, but if proven to be even mildly true are impressive numbers to go on. Especially considering Sony spent the majority of the year with a more expensive console than its competitor.

2010 is setting up to be a great year for sales comparisons and hopefully both consoles remain at comparative prices in order to see which console truly is more in demand.

(PS: Take this article light heartily. Don’t be a mindless fanbot 😉 It’s all in fun.)

  1. now that bough are the same price
you can see what gamers realy want

  2. Lets quote myself,,, 🙂 “Lets expect around 1.4 million PS3’s sold for December NPD.” Pretty spot on wasn’t I 😛

  3. I wonder what the NPD will be for January. Being that Ps3s are sold out pretty much everywhere. I even know a few people who have brought a 360 just because there were no Ps3s in stock.

  4. Meanwhile, we all sit back in the PS3/360 fanboy-camps and shield our eyes fro Nintendo’s sales figures.

  5. well what did you expect
nintendo is advertising there gimiky control game cube co much, that ewery parent is buying there children one
and hardly anybody is playing it

id like to say something to the dude that runs this website
can wee hope to see more gaming news and less sale figures
these are gaming consoles right? arent the games supose to be the main topic of the day, and not how well some fucked up company is doing
(sorry for my language but i beliewe that it was the most proper way to say it)

  6. OMG look at the Wii. Who is still buying those?

  7. Thanks for the comment reigen, but we have plenty of games news…where this particular news story is incredible important. December NPD is one of the most significant stories of the year, and by adding more context for the year as a whole – we can wrap up this year’s sales in one simple article. Thanks again.

  8. Lol Reigen — There are only like 3-4 sales articles a month. We average over 100+ articles every month, lol.

  9. The only nice thing about the Wii is it’s the “Dreamcast” of this era… It’s easily modified/hackable, it can do MANY unexpected things just through softmods, and runs all sorts of emulators perfectly. It’s worth it to have a used one lying around for all of your old roms, Monster Hunter 3, Tatsunoko vs. Capcom, and some gimmicky drunk-party titles.

I think between the grandmas/toddlers and the modders, there’s still a great sales movement. Still better than owning a 360.

  10. @Reigen – Not only are you a fanboy; your also an idiot.

  11. *you’re

  12. @Reigen 😀 your serious right??

  14. good to know, PS3 deserves the attention it should have got upon release.
