Amid conflicting rumors on the PS6 release date, most fans don’t believe that Sony will announce the console before 2027. Over the last six months, there have been multiple reports on whether the PlayStation 6 will make its supposed release in late 2027. The idea goes that Playstation console generations tend to be seven years apart, and since the PS5 was officially teased in April 2019 and released in November 2020, the PS6 would be expected to come out during the 2027 holiday season. In fact, if we’re following through with this thought experiment, we should see an announcement on the console at some point soon. However, a betting market shows that many speculate that Sony will likely push the next PlayStation console back.
Some PlayStation 6 rumors see it releasing in 2029 at the latest
According to a market on Kalshi, only 25.6% of betters believe that the PS6 will be announced before 2027 (as of April 7, 2026). The market was started many years ago in October 24, 2024 and has amassed enough bets to go over $100,000 thus far, showing how contentious this topic has been and how long it has been relevant.
Looking at the history of the bet, it has more or less hovered around the 50% mark for years until late October 2025. Since then, betters have become much less confident in the PS6 being announced in 2026, consistently lowering the chances until its current point of 25%.
The news that likely began this drop in late October was an official video featuring PS5 lead architect Mark Cerny and AMD GM Jack Huynh about a machine-learning technology for video games called Project Amethyst. Near the end of the clip, Cerny said, “Overall, it’s of course still very early days of these technologies, they only exist in simulation right now, but the results are quite promising and I’m really excited about bringing them to a future console in a few years’ time.” This has been interpreted as a supposed release window for the PlayStation 6 to be 2027 or later, which doesn’t add confidence that the console will actually come out soon.
Several reports from a few insiders have since casted further doubt on the PS6 release date and by extension its pending announcement. In late December 2025, insider Tom Henderson wrote that console manufacturers were thinking about delaying next-gen console production for both the PlayStation 6 and Xbox’s codenamed Project Helix. This was due to rising costs for production, citing how both Sony’s and Xbox’s current consoles have had their prices increase due to the RAM shortage, which has been mainly caused by the rapid expansion of AI data centers. The situation has led the companies to consider whether its next-gen consoles “should be delayed from their intended 2027-2028 release window.”
Then two months later in mid-February 2026, a report from Bloomberg corroborated the potential delay for the PS6, with sources saying that its release window could be pushed all the way back to 2029. Once again, the cited cause was incredibly high demand and a limited supply for memory chips due to artificial intelligence.
So it comes to no surprise that Sony was forced to announce a rare price hike for the PS5, with the new costs for the PS5 being $649.99 and the PS5 Pro being $899.99 in the US as of April 2. It blamed the “global economic landscape,” exacerbating concerns that the PS6 and its rumored handheld would have an incredibly high price tag as well.
The only good news is that several reports in March suggest that these chip shortages may not actually impact its original release window of late 2027. YouTube’s Moore’s Law Is Dead and AMD insider Kepler L2, two trusted sources, suggest that Sony is being pressured to release the PS6 alongside Project Helix. These new reports weren’t enough to increase the bet’s chances above 26%, but they have helped to stop the bleeding, so to speak.
