Sony has always been a determined company that pushed its technology and products to the brink regardless of consumer demand or interest. Whether it’s the Betamax, Blu-ray disc format or now 3D gaming, Sony is putting all of its eggs into the basket and pushing them into a World Record omelet. Regardless of whether or not you’re on board for the 3D movement, the gaming industry as a whole seems to be and it’s one of the cooler features the PlayStation 3 has to offer.
As someone who has been enjoying Call of Duty: Black Ops’ campaign in 3D and Gran Turismo 5 in the same fashion, I can confirm that for me, it does bring gaming to a new level of immersion. Of course it won’t be for everyone and that’s why it’s given to you as a choice, but for those who choose it, you won’t regret it. Thankfully, Sony is pushing the technology hard and has confirmed that over 50 titles are sure to release with 3D enabled (20 of them being in-house).
Speaking with Develop, SCEE studio director Mick Hocking, demonstrated exactly how big 3D is getting within the industry.
“We’re applying 3D to more than 20 internal games at Sony,” says Hocking.
“It’s a very positive thing to see the great level of interest in 3D from our development studios. Overall we have more than fifty titles currently being converted into 3D, and this number if growing fast,” he said in an exclusive interview with Develop.
“Some of them are massive names. That’s a really, really good sign that the industry is behind our unique message that 3D is a key element in the future of home consoles.”
Fortunately for developers, unlike the initial launch of the PlayStation 3, Sony is willing to go all out in helping external studios understand and implement the technology perfectly.
“We’re actively talking to developers and publishers, and we’re also offering training to them to help them get up to speed with 3D,” he said.
“3D isn’t just about adding depth to a picture – developers need to know how to get the very best out of the technology on PS3 and we’ll ensure that they do. Not only make it technically correct,” he said, “but also to be more inventive with it, how to get the most creatively from it for their particular type of game.
“One great example is in Killzone 3, when you’re playing in 3D, where the player has to plant an explosive charge on the wall. When they do, the charge comes out of the screen and looks like it’s in the room with you, and honestly it feels like an explosive charge has been placed on your TV. It’s amazing!”
If you’ve been an early adopter to this tech, I’d love to hear your thoughts about it below. If you’re still on the fence about it, that’s understandable, but you’re definitely missing out! Do you think the 3D gaming epidemic is going to fully take off or will it sputter and fail quickly?
Can’t wait to get a 3D TV and buy a Home Theater system, but I’ll wait 2 or 3 years to get both, probably.
Having just bought a Sony 3DTV I am already going to say that Wipeout HD in 3D is simply amazing :D! The effect is awesome and very well made unlike the 3D in Black Ops… I really think that 3D will be the future for video games at the very least. You have to experience it to actually see the potential.

Are the conversions going to be free with an update or do we have to pay extra for it?
