According to Home Media Magazine, standalone Blu-ray players are catching up to the PS3 as most popular Blu-ray player device in U.S. households.

Just in the last six months, standalone Blu-ray players have gobbled up 45% of the Blu-ray market, with PS3 holding 47%. The report states that for Blu-ray player to grow significantly, its ownership base will have to move well beyond the PS3 platform. Stats are already showing this move, as 1.7 million households currently own both a PS3 and Blu-ray player.

It will be interesting to see how long the Blu-ray media format lasts as there are already disc formats that can hold anywhere from 500GB-6TB (see HVD). Also, with digital download becoming more popular, there is a chance that we may not even use physical media discs in the future and that all games will be streamed or downloaded to a hard-drive.

  1. Not surprising with $99 players out there. Still a smarter buy to get the PS3 though obviously.

Well if you are a gamer, yes. The PS3 is the best purchase. However, if you are a tech nerd and enjoy your movies in 3D Blu-ray with lossless audio, you’ll have to go with a newer standalone player.

  3. Oh yeah forgot that the PS3 lost that with 3D. Even then though that is a very small percent of the market.

  4. only in 1080p 3d not in 720p 3d
