Syndicate banned from release in Australia; EA doesn’t repeal

The first-person shooter, Syndicate, did not agree with the Australian Classification Board and won’t be released in the country, Gamespot reports. This is what the board had to say about the game:

“Combatants can take locational damage an can be explicitly dismembered, decapitated, or bisected by the force of the gunfire. The depictions are accompanied by copious bloodspray and injuries are shown realistically and with detail. Flesh and bone are often exposed while arterial sprays of blood continue to spurt from wounds at regular intervals.”

“The game also allows a player to repeatedly damage enemy combatants’ corpses. For example, it is possible for a player to decapitate a corpse with a headshot before individually blowing off each of its limbs.”

As brutal as it is, this doesn’t change the fact that adults are restrained from being allowed to make their own decisions on what they want to be exposed to. Even though an adult rating for video games is set to be introduced sometime in 2012 in Australia, this won’t make it in time for the release of EA’s reinvention of the Syndicate franchise. Here is what EA Australia had to say about the ban:

“It’s regrettable that government policy in Australia is denying adults the right to play Syndicate. The game will be not be available in Australia, despite its enthusiastic response from fans. We were encouraged by the government’s recent agreement to adopt an 18+ age rating for games. However, delays continue to force an arcane censorship on games–cuts that would never be imposed on books or movies. We urge policy makers to take swift action to implement an updated policy that reflects today’s market and gives its millions of adult consumers the right to make their own content choices.”

Let’s hope a change of heart is possible by the time the new adult rating is implemented, otherwise our fellow gamers down under won’t get to commit mind-control suicide on enemies like the rest of the world will when Syndicate releases. If you haven’t heard of the game, check out this trailer:
