It’s wild to think that The Wolf Among Us originally came out in 2013 and 2014. But more than 12 years later, Telltale’s most interesting game is back on modern consoles as The Wolf Among Us Remastered. With a wonderful art style that has stood the test of time, a story that still resonates, and great bonus features, this remaster does it right.
The Telltale formula is a bit quaint at this point, as its mix of quick-time events and dialogue got oversaturated by the formula itself and imitators. However, when a story is told the right way, it’s actually a really captivating experience. The Wolf Among Us also has a good mix of adventure-game events, and because it wasn’t as streamlined as some later Telltale offerings, you get to do some detective work as Bigby Wolf and solve a few puzzles along the way.
However, what made The Wolf Among Us a special game was its mix of a compelling murder mystery (the shock of seeing the head at the end of the first episode still sticks with players) and a really interesting world filled with fables in the real world. It stays a bit more grounded than the source material, allowing the human issues of its gritty, over-the-top characters to really shine. That mix really captivates and makes it a thrilling story to revisit.
Returning players will appreciate the mix of bonus content that makes The Wolf Among Us Remastered worth buying beyond its improved visuals and gameplay (though I did experience a few instances of patented Telltale jank, such as textures not loading properly). Five well-produced making-of videos cover the original game’s art, its characters, and what went into this remaster, plus a great image gallery full of concept art and character drawings.
However, the best addition is the deleted scenes. Five separate deleted scenes have been added that are playable, with the coolest being an alternate ending. For some, it’s pretty clear why they were left unfinished (everything from dialogue to visual elements is missing) and not included, but this is exactly the kind of bonus content I want to see in a remaster. Hopefully more games will follow suit in the future, as this was a really inspired and fun addition.
The Wolf Among Us Remastered (PS5) Review: Final Verdict
The Wolf Among Us Remastered lives up to its name. It’s the best way to revisit one of Telltale’s best-crafted stories, and the bonus content will make you appreciate it even more after you’ve rolled credits again. This is an easy recommendation whether you’ve played it before or are coming to the series for the first time.
