360 is now playing catchup to PS3 in fiscal 2009 sales figures

One of the funnest moments for fanboys each year is the release of the full-on fiscal yearly sales reports from the three companies in the console race for market share dominance. Without any surprise, it goes without saying that Nintendo has literally crushed the competition this generation and chances are, Sony and Microsoft will not be able to catch them for the lead. That makes this generation a two-horse race in terms of any actual close competition between companies.

Up until this year, Sony executives have had to read headlines revealing how much better its HD competitor has been selling than the brand that has dominated the industry for nearly 15 years. However, that seems like it’s all about to change as the three giants have released their current to-date fiscal year reports.

Surprisingly, despite a $100 price cut for the Xbox 360 Elite, an Arcade console sitting at $199 and a Limited Edition Call of Duty console released in November, Microsoft finds itself in last place in regards to sales for this fiscal year by a significant margin. According to reports, Microsoft managed to only shift 8.5 million units world wide to date. For those unaware, that covers the time frame from April 1st, 2009 to December 31st, 2009.

Of course, the news of Microsoft falling to third place was met by the surprisingly and certainly unexpected news that Sony’s PlayStation 3 had sold roughly 10.8 million units world wide. For those math enthusiasts, that’s a 2+ million sales gap between the two closest competitors. The sales increases for PlayStation 3’s comes on the highly successful results of a $100 price drop bringing the console to $299 like its competitor the Xbox 360 Elite.

If things continue on this course, it is very likely that by the launch of the next generation of consoles, Sony will have overtaken Microsoft in world wide sales and continue the trend of watching Microsoft pick up the pieces from behind.

Here are the official Fiscal reports.

2009 Fiscal Year Breakdown:
Sony PS2: 5.6
Sony PS3: 10.8
Nintendo Wii: 17.0
Microsoft Xbox 360: 8.5

  11. A console version of Turtle vs Rabbit race.

Ps3 is a turtle slow in the begning but better after.
360 is a Rabit, Fast in the beganing and a loser in the final.
