David Cage, creator of Heavy Rain, has always had high praise for Sony as a publisher and his praise continued this week while at GDC Europe this week. One of the aspects Cage respects Sony so much for is their ability to want to take risks when it comes to publishing “forward-thinking” titles.
“Publishers in general don’t have balls. That’s a fact” said Cage.
Cage then went on to explain how a lot of other publishers aren’t taking enough steps to improve upon the industry by taking the same risks as Sony.
“They want a safe bet. They look at what was successful last year, and ask you to do the same. You need to give them reasons to trust you… With a game like Heavy Rain, it comes together very late. If I showed you the alpha of HR, you’d probably kill it and say that it would never happen. Many publishers would have killed that game at that stage. Sony didn’t.”
Despite the freedoms given to Quantic Dream and Cage in order to complete Heavy Rain and push it out to the gaming public, Cage didn’t exactly get to finish the game as planned. However, as the title recently passed the 1.5 million sold mark, it’s safe to say that the niche title was definitely a success. It’s not every day such a unique game manages to pass over the million man mark, but Heavy Rain managed it.
I think Microsoft has bigger balls tbh… Selling a system that is broken and promising that it has been fixed.
Good for Sony. They care about the gamer. 🙂
I agree with Mr. David Cage. Back in 1997, while other developers were creating arcade racing games, Sony releases a little game called Gran Turismo. While everyone else was about fast and exotic cars, Sony and PD took the risk to introduce us to realistic driving and everyday cars. The rest is history. Now every other racing game tries to be like GT. With the PS2, we were introduced to Ico and Shadow of the Colossus. Now with the PS3, we got games like Little Big Planet and Heavy Rain. I hope they never stop taking “risks”.
hahahahahaha @#1 thats a good one
That’s good to hear. I still need to get Heavy Rain. I will be getting Little Big Planet 2 and Last Guardian too. I love how Sony supports innovative games like this.
