The release date for the motion wars between Sony and Microsoft draws ever so closer and developers are starting to truly realize the advantages and disadvantages of each peripheral. While Microsoft may like to boast its technology as revolutionary, the company is going to be hard-pressed to find the support that Kinect will need to truly take off as a serious gaming accessory.
Today, with the announcement of EA’s “Create” title, the company is going after the same style of gamers who purchase titles like Sony’s exclusive LittleBigPlanet. Create allows families to create their own game worlds while also creating environmental obstacles they must solve and complete. However, EA has decided to skip Kinect support for this title and only utilize Sony’s PlayStation Move.
“Create uses families’ imaginations to develop new ways to play together that are both fun and challenging,” said Harvey Elliott, VP and General Manager at EA Bright Light. “We wanted to design a game where the only limit is the imagination.”
So, why is EA skipping over Kinect compatibility?
The possible reasoning: “PlayStation Move is just more efficient.” – Mathiew Girard, Senior Producer for R.U.S.E.
Unfortunately for 360 owners looking for hardcore titles or even mildly casual titles utilizing Kinect more and more, that just seems unlikely at the current time.
Only one of my 360-owning friends have any intention of buying Kinect at all, and it’s not looking very good for hardcore gamers at the moment. Perhaps Microsoft can improve it in the future, but I think it’s more just an experiment to see if they can branch out their hands to the casual audience.
Frankly, they really had no good reason to skip over Kinect, unless Create is really complicated (which it doesn’t seem to be).
