PlayStation gamers who enjoy prison-escape games can look forward to a new entry in an iconic franchise. Team17 has announced The Escapists 3, nearly a decade after the previous game was released. The third installment changes the franchise’s presentation by bringing its prison-escape gameplay into 3D.
The upcoming game was announced during the Triple-i Initiative Showcase this week. Similar to the previous games, players will need to be smart while crafting, sneaking, fighting, and improvising their way through five prisons. The sequel improves players’ arsenal with over 120 new weapons, all now presented with a new perspective.

How the new 3D perspective changes escapes, co-op and prison life
The Escapists 3 retains the franchise’s top-down perspective, but now presents its characters and environments in 3D. This adds a new level of depth players will have to account for while planning their escape. They can also team up with friends in split-screen and online co-op. The game also introduces XP progression, which helps unlock new skills and tools. These skills carry over from one prison to the next as players progress.
Players will need to use their people skills as they speak with other inmates and complete tasks to gather resources. Each of the five prisons has a unique layout, guard routine, and secrets to uncover.
“The Escapists, as a series, has aptly been both a breakout and runaway success for Team17,” said Harley Homewood, General Manager, Team17. “As such, I’m delighted that we’re offering players the chance to become institutionalized once more, but this time in fully realized, 3D correctional facilities. It’s a fresh perspective on a fan favorite, and today’s announcement is just a sneak peek of what’s to come.”
The Escapists 3 will launch on PS5, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2 in 2027.
