Capcom’s recently released sequel, Lost Planet 2 released at at a very poor level in terms of sales and reviews, but that hasn’t stopped Keiji Inafune from stepping forward and stating he still has faith in the Lost Planet franchise. Inafune, the industry’s latest crazy man, believes that Lost Planet 2 suffered due to the lack of love its new developers had for the title and has reassured fans that if the franchise continues, he’ll be more directly involved like in the first installment.
“I came up with the concept for the original Lost Planet and got involved quite a bit,” Inafune told Edge magazine. “However, regrettably, Lost Planet 2 was done by someone else and I didn’t really have any direct involvement. I still believe in the franchise, and if we do more with it I will definitely get involved directly.
“If a particular franchise or IP is continued by the creator, there is no problem. But in a large organization that’s not possible all the time. Therefore if you have to change the director or producer, etc, they would have to love the IP or franchise, including good points and bad points, as a whole. Without love, nothing happens.”
It’s hard to say whether or not Inafune’s lack of contribution in Lost Planet 2 helped or hindered the title, but when compared to the original, the sequel definitely lacked that special something. Perhaps Lost Planet was better of being left a one iteration product and didn’t benefit from spanning to a sequel, who know, but as it stands now, the franchise definitely has something to prove going forward.
