Marvel has final say in MVC3

When it comes to the successful Marvel Vs Capcom franchise, the comic book company, Marvel, is given almost full control and power over the decision making progress surrounding the game. This control ranges literally from the name of a character’s maneuver to how Capcom is even allows to promote the title. It sounds crazy to find out that Marvel has so much control over the game, but this also may be why the quality assurance for the previous titles have always been top notch.

Speaking with IncGamers, Ryota Niitsuma, producer of MVC3 reveales exactly how much control Marvel has over the project.

“In terms of game creation Marvel must approve absolutely everything,” Niitsuma states. “The actual action of each character, names of the moves and even how we market and promote the title. If we [Capcom] want to do a hands-on event then we have to notify Marvel we are doing that.”

This has me wondering how much control a developer gives over or an IP takes control of during other development cycles. Do developers give any control to other companies in a game that involves a movie or book tie in? Judging from the lack of quality, I’m going to have to go with no. What do you guys think?

  1. Oh, God, this means that DISNEY HAS CONTROL OF MVC3! D:

  2. It might sound to harsh, but if you look at the past games it should be a clear indication that the quality of MvsC 3will be top notch.

Anyway, having Marvel decide over the special move names seems a little too much for me.
