Naughty Dog: “We’re not done with Drake.”

The Uncharted franchise has been a successful series for not only Sony’s PlayStation 3, but the developers behind the product as well — Naughty Dog. With the third installment coming entitled, Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception, many wondered exactly how many titles could be left involving their favorite hero. If Naughty Dog is to be believed, you can expect more titles featuring Drake as the developer has revealed that they have no plans to retire him.

Speaking to Edge Magazine, Naughty Dog game director Justin Richmond was reluctant to announce whether or not Drake’s Deception was also Drake’s last stand. Without any confirmation, this potentially gives way for Uncharted 4 rumors to start up immediately.

“You see it in the movies,” he said. “They constantly reboot things you just saw ten years ago. You’re like: “Wait a minute. I just saw that!” Spider-Man is just ridiculous. It’s something you have to be careful of with any kind of creative endeavor, and the lure to reinvent yourself is always there.

“But one good thing is that we feel we’re not done with Drake yet; we haven’t done all we wanted to do, and there are still technical hurdles and goals we want to get over, and do even more stuff in gameplay… We’re very cogniscent of the legacy of what Drake is, and that every game should advance the story and the genre.”

While it’s awesome to expect more Drake in the future, it’s hard not to look at one of my other favorite treasure hunters and realize how far she’s fallen. That’s right: I’m looking at you Croft! Hopefully Naughty Dog can continue to keep its characters and story relevant enough to please fans. If Drake does go the way of Croft, we’ll all be sorely disappointed.

  1. I like the new Lora and didn’t like the old one so Square-Enix-Eidos is doing something right in getting new fans in. If it’s not broken, don’t fix it, as is the case with Uncharted. But almost everyone I know that liked Tomb Raider don’t like it anymore and haven’t for a while. The Reboot either has them interested or still not caring, but at least it is bringing SOME of the old people in and definitely reeling in some new people.
