Over the last week, hackers have rejoiced in the fact that Sony’s PlayStation 3 keys have been released as well as keys for the PlayStation Portable. These keys, of course, give hackers unlimited access to both devices and allows them to create software, homebrew, etc., for each that is undetectable to the hardware and registers as a licensed product. While this would hardly hurt Sony in the piracy department due to sheer game size alone, it is something Sony isn’t going to let slide either.
Sony issued the following statement to Edge Magazine: “We are aware of this, and are currently looking into it. We will fix the issues through network updates, but because this is a security issue, we are not able to provide you with any more details.”
Frankly, I hope they find a way to close the hole up — but if they don’t, I’d appreciate it if some custom firmware was released that enabled .MKV playback naturally. That would be a big help.
From a PR standpoint they obviously have to do something, but it’d be great if the firmware updates weren’t such a pain. After the initial security patch that’s no doubt around the corner, they should just update the system whenever they have something worthwhile to add in terms of features — they’re never going to stop it completely, why rush out otherwise empty updates every month?
They can’t fix this with a firmware update. It’ll take more drastic measures. That’s why they’re talking about doing something “through network updates” – they’re probably looking at introducing something server-side.
I’ve no idea what that could be, or even if it’s possible, but I hope they’re successful. This “homebrew” excuse is a pretty lame attempt at giving a cover for piracy. Even if someone does release software that’s ‘only’ an emulator, what does an emulator run? Usually software that’s been pirated from older/lesser machines.
This can’t be fixed.. The only genuine way is to introduce entirely new hardware..
Seriously, Sony have some real issues on their hands with this.. Why do I get the feeling there will now be a rushed Ps4 out on the market now >_<
I’m with you on this one, Dean. I hope it gets fixed…but man, if I could find a device OTHER than PC that plays HD MKV then I’d be a very happy man. Transcoding those puppies are a big pain.
@Klein
Use MKV2VOB. Takes like 2 minutes at the most and plays on PS3 flawlessly.Plus it’s free. No loss in video quality because it just puts it in a different container and doesn’t actually transcode.
I made a how-to guide for the program on Youtube like a year ago, lol. I know exactly how to use it. I still don’t like to transcode because you need around real time conversion and are left with 2 files: the original and the transcoded (which is usually larger). It’s the best option I’ve seen so far, but still not as good as slapping an MKV on that puppy dog and playing it.
I’m hoping Sony does fix it. It’s not fun knowing that Nintendo is constantly fighting hackers with useless updates that just doesn’t add to anything. I’m worried the case will be the same for Sony.
