We’ve already heard the sob story before, but Ninja Theory is continuing to push out the idea that the development team made no money from Heavenly Sword. In fact, we’re going to bet that the company paid all of its bills and staff with triple-layered gum during the entire process instead. However, despite that, the development team at Ninja Theory recently told CVG that they would have liked to develop Heavenly Sword 2.
“I don’t know if Sony made any money on Heavenly Sword but we didn’t,” says Tameem Antoniades, “There are pros and cons, if you’re exclusive you get more attention but when you’re multi-platform, at this stage in the cycle, there’s more competition. You’ve got to weigh it against each other,” he added.
“But we couldn’t do Heavenly Sword 2 as a multi-platform because it’s owned by Sony, the tech we developed for that game is also owned by Sony.”
“But there’s a different dynamic with a platform holder. I mean, we signed up and we happy to sign up to it because it allowed our studio to grow and we’re really grateful for that, but it feels like as a studio we need to think about the next few years, the next games we release.
“We want them to be multi-platform so we had to come up with a new idea.”
Regardless of what the truth may be, fans hoping for a sequel to Heavenly Sword can stop holding their breaths. Despite it being a solid game and one of my personal favorites, it’s quite obvious that Ninja Theory just wasn’t happy with the situation, thus, we’ll never see a sequel to the title. Ah well.
… that gum commercial is ridiculous, lol.
Woah did I read that right? HS’s technology is owned by Sony? Now it all makes sense why they went to Unreal Engine. HS’s engine was incredibly good – and I know they had help from Sony Cambridge, but they did some brill work with 4xAA and HDR lighting. Sad to see them to go to Unreal, but it looks like they had no choice.
If Sony owns the right to the game and the tech behind it, what’s stopping them from handing it out to another studio for a sequel?
I need to play Heavenly Sword 1.
“If Sony owns the right to the game and the tech behind it, what’s stopping them from handing it out to another studio for a sequel?”
…because as it said in the interview, it made no money.
