PS3 Jailbreak: Sony’s Response

Ever since the PlayStation 3 first launched, hackers have been attempting to hack it.  It was not until recently that they succeeded.  PSJailbreak, the website responsible for the creation of this modification, is currently under much heat with Sony.  Sony is has also filed a lawsuit against Zoomba LDC, who is distributing the modification-chip.

The modification allows its users to bypass the PlayStation 3’s, as well as play retail games directly installed to the console’s hard drive.  Users of the modification are receiving an error code rarely seen by PlayStation Network users (8002A227).  This error code indicates a direct console ban, preventing all access to the PlayStation Network.

While the error code isn’t entirely unheard of, a majority of such console bans are only temporary.  Rumors quickly surfaced, claiming that Sony was breaking this trend, permanently banning consoles using the modification.  The rumors were quickly crushed, however.  The image posted above was quickly deemed a fake, one found on the PlayStation 3’s Official Site in the past.

I find this to be rather disappointing.  Piracy and hacking is a growing issue this generation, one that is significantly hurting the gaming industry.  It’s time that Sony truly fights back against it, dealing out the necessary consequences to those using these modifications.  Otherwise, hackers and pirates will continue to take advantage of Sony, and their wonderful console.

  1. I don’t think Piracy is has big of a deal as Gamestop. For some reason, people think its better to take money from a developer buying their game used, than it is for them to pirate it. Or Piracy is looked down upon more, than buying used games for sure.

  2. i hope they do make such a security bann, hackers did enough damage already
howewer i am suprised it took them this long to sucsesfully hack a ps3, isnt it like 3 or 4 years after its release

  3. “It’s time that Sony truly fights back against it” – I think that’s a little harsh toward Sony as the PS3 has been the only console of this generation to leave hackers scratching there heads. It’s taken 4 years for someone to come up with a working mod/hack and Sony will probably deal with it, and if they don’t it’s only a vast MINORITY that are using it.

You do know that that image is fake? Well, kinda..
It is like 2 years old.. =P

  5. @Traumatic

I think he used the image more as a “Haha, this is what your console ban will look like!” than a “this is what someone got.”

  6. @ Loki — Perhaps it is harsh in the sense of hacking the PlayStation 3 in particular, yes. However, there are so many instances where Sony has failed to take action against people breaking the rules. That said, I can see where you’re coming from.

@ Traumatic — I realize that the image is fake. Thus this statement: “The rumors were quickly crushed, however. The image posted above was quickly deemed a fake, one found on the PlayStation 3’s Official Site in the past.”

  9. First of all I want to say superb blog! I had a quick
question that I’d like to ask if you don’t mind. I was interested to know how you center yourself and clear your mind prior to writing.
I have had difficulty clearing my mind in getting my ideas out.
I truly do enjoy writing however it just seems like the first 10 to 15 minutes are
usually wasted simply just trying to figure out how to begin. Any ideas or hints?
    Thanks!
