Sony’s PlayStation 3 has sold over five-million units in Japan, reaching the milestone in three-and-a-half years. According to Enterbrain numbers, the console achieved 5,001,598 sold units in its home country on 11 April. In comparison, the Nintendo Wii accumulated five-million unit sales in Japan at the beginning of 2008.

After its 11 November 2006 launch, the PS3 has had a number of top performing video game titles, with the list led by Final Fantasy XIII at 1,883,828 copies sold. Metal Gear Solid 4 is in second place with over a million units behind at 706,461. Yakuza 4 comes in third with 526,093 units, despite only releasing three weeks ago and still placing in top ten weekly sales charts.

Lifetime sales for the other two current generation consoles stood at 10,009,736 for the Wii and 1,235,049 for the Xbox 360 as of 28 February. Microsoft be trying, Japan ain’t listening.

The PS3 isn’t in second place worldwide. It has been selling more than the Xbox 360 worldwide for some time though.

  3. wow….the numbers of Wiis sold is still staggering…..

but congratz to the 5 mil achievement…now if you would just stop being a bunch of little pricks and give us back our OS Feature……

or of course, give me 100 back for false advertisement? perhaps

Did you use it Mr Moogle?

Lol, someone pull out the DS numbers now :p

  6. LOL.

It’s not so much about NOT using it but the thought that you won’t be able to use it never again (In my opinion, at least).

On topic: Nice. I think pretty much everyone (In the world!, lol) waited for the price cut, which is why we’ve seen an increase in sales. And if you think about it, PS3 has seen many exclusives in the past 6 months (Starting with Uncharted 2 and Demon’s Souls) AND more games down the road (GT5 anyone?).

So yeah, nicely done ps3. We all love you xD

  7. Great numbers although nothing Like PS2. But Sony have to blame themselves for their second place, High Price, No value for money games. SInce the price Drop and great games available PS3 is consistently performing at top in Japan and rest of the world.

@ Dr. Moogle I think it was not an advertised feature by Sony, OS feature was advertised by Amazon. and when we buy a product we agree to EULA, please read that. and the only person here to blame is geohot, who in first place shouldn’t gone on record in publicizing that he has accessed Hypervisor, he should have kept him to himself.

PS3 is sold out in most places in London, at least it was when I last looked. They need to open some more factories.

  9. @Taus: It would’ve happened sooner or later (Even if Geohot didn’t release the exploit). And it was advertised by Sony and no, even if you agree to the EULA it doesn’t mean that’s above the law.

Common law example (On my countray anyway): If we were on the desert and you needed a drink of water, I could say “I’ll sell you the water, but it costs a million bucks. You’ll pay me later”. Even though you AGREED to pay me it doesn’t mean it gives me the right to get a million bucks from you.

    Something like that.

  10. Gratz to Sony on the 5 million mark in their home turf. Now they just need to strp it up in NA and Eur. Get another price dorp this holiday and offer free game as bundles like last Thanksgiving.

  11. Congrats, Sony.

Wii is still at 10 Million while Ps3 is at 5, 360 sales is a JOKE there. I’d be surprised if Ps3 outsold the wii in Japan in less then 5 years, because wii is a beast.

  13. @Patrick: not yet, i was wanting to for some time….but installing zerogame already takes 10 gigs, and i havent the room. I was waiting til right after i expanded my HDD….80gigs just didnt cut it

@taus90: i know, i was just saying that i would LIKE it…not that im expecting it
