LittleBigPlanet developer, Media Molecule, has officially been acquired by Sony Computer Entertainment for an undisclosed amount. In the publisher’s efforts to secure studios looking to deliver unique experiences to its console owners, bringing MM inside the PlayStation family fully is yet another step in that direction.

Shuhei Yoshida, SCE Worldwide Studios President, is more than thrilled by this decision and looks forward to moving forward with Media Molecule as part of the first-party team.

”Since they burst onto the gaming scene, Media Molecule have proved to be a truly exciting and innovative studio, who have proved their world-class credentials with the creation of the incredible LittleBigPlanet,” he said.

“SCE WWS is all about creating ambitious, innovative and ground breaking games, traits that Media Molecule clearly have. To bring them into our family proves our dedication to creating fantastic new experiences that we believe will cement our position as industry leaders.”

This is great news for Sony and owners of the PlayStation 3. I can’t wait to see what else this duo brings forth this generation.

Good news, LittleBigPlanet is a game I’ve been playing on and off since I bought it at launch. It just has so much content, from the constant DLC offered to the insane amount of community levels to choose from, it’s practically never ending. And now, I’m attempting to create my own level too which is one heck of a time sinker but very satisfying to learn the tricks and come up with a fantastic level in the end (well I hope so!).

I read about a rumor where LittleBigPlanet 2 would debut at E3 and be bundled with the Playstation wand controller. We’ve already seen a demo showing it off. I’m not expecting it to be a full on sequel, but more of a bigger sized expansion pack with these new features. It would be terrible to split the community at this point. Bundling the wand only seems to make more sense now so I can’t wait to see if we’ll get any surprise E3 announcements out of this.

  2. Awesome news. Now LBP2 can be made with full support from Sony and hopefully some lag-less servers. I never played online because it is a joke.

  3. This is awesome news. Media molecule are now always going to be ps3 exclusive and that means more great games for a great consle (even if u forget the psn error thing)

  4. Mmmmh no, I think LBP 2 wouldn’t work right now. I mean it would need to be something huge to blow off LBP ‘cuz right now there’s over 2 000 0000 community levels (So yeah, never ending game).

My feeling is that we’ll start to see bigger DLC + Motion control. Sony should have both resources and contacts to fund new dlc and bring things ala pirates of the caribean.

  5. Little big planet 2 anyone

  6. Wow, good move Sony. They should get more console exclusives in my point of view (but quality over quantity always 🙂 ). I wonder what will be Sony’s next move…Buying Square-enix? :-O That would surely raise PS3 sales. But Little big planet introduced the ps3 to a lot of casual gamers. Sony had made an entry when they finally released LBP (in my opinion). Before that I can’t really remember any casual games for the ps3.

  7. yeah they should make a little big planet racing game or shooter or other type of game with sack boy oh i forgot we got ModNation Racers

  8. VofEscaflowne March 2, 2010 @ 14:34

A… shooter? Well there is the Paintinator from the Metal Gear Solid level pack. That’s as close of a shooter this game will ever become :p I wouldn’t be surprised to see Sackboy make an appearance in ModNation Racers actually. I mean he was in Hot Shots Golf after all 😉

  9. Thats great to have them on board. LBP was an amazing game and was like nothing else on a console.

  10. Great news from Sony, and MM deserves to be part of the PS family. I remember back when Sony said sackboy would be the mascot for PS3, everyone was like sack-who?

  11. Wow, I thought Sony had bought out Media Molecule shortly after the release of LBP on the PS3.

Anyways, smart move on Sony’s part. In my opinion, LittleBigPlanet is one of the strongest current-gen Playstation franchises, and Sony will want to keep that genius to themselves.

  12. @ TRF, agreed, little big planet was a smash hit, i cant wait to see what they’ll bring to the table, “prays for LBP 2 in the distant future”

This a really smart move on Sony’s part, Not only did Media Molecule offer one of the best games on the Ps3, it also provided the gaming industry a new innovation and new outlook into video games. They made a great game despite not having to shoot any thing.

  14. smart smart sony

  15. This is fantastic news. MM gets some assuredly awesome job security, and Sony continues their trend of backing innovative developers and their ideas. Love it.

  16. Great news really, sony conitnues to expand i love how this feels 😛
am i the only one that didnt really love LBP? even though its a great game

  17. Moocows111111 March 2, 2010 @ 18:20

“am i the only one that didnt really love LBP?”

Lots of people didn’t like the game, people have their own preferences, whether it is platforming games, FPS of TPS, as long as Sony continues to support innovative companies, such as Media Molecule and Thatgamecompany (Flow and Flower’s development team) then out Ps3 experiment will continue to grow and Sony would finally begin to profit off this beast of a machine.

  18. LBP 2 will be amazing

  19. well its no big deal…but its good to know that!

i hope MM continues to make innovative AAA games!

  20. HURRAY! great news another gem in the Playstation’s Crown ! Sony is expanding its first party support which is already bigger than Nintendo and MS. Now let see what this means to game and what does MM have for us in future, Add on for LBP is good but i want a new game.

  21. Great news, keeps getting better. I read also on Gamesot about Sony making an Ipad and PSP phone. its that true?
