One of the main selling points Sony has been using to push gamers into its PlayStation Plus subscription plan is the ‘fact’ that gamers could continue to keep their DLC, premium themes, and premium avatars once their subscriptions ran out. Today, unfortunately, Sony has revealed that this was an honest mistake and that DLC is not one of the components the user will be able to keep come expiration.
Honestly, this is just complete and utter stupidity on Sony’s part. When I first heard this, it reminded me immediately of the times when Sony was pushing “Game Sharing” as one of the coolest elements PlayStation 3 owners were supplied with. However, the company then started telling people that Game Sharing was illegal and accounts could be banned if it were found to be doing so.
In my opinion, this is Sony dropping the ball hardcore and business practices like this shouldn’t happen — in fact, instead of saying: “It was an honest mistake, we’re taking that away.” Sony should have manned up and said: “Hey, we made a mistake, you benefited from it and now all DLC will remain permanent.”
I understand that Sony cares a lot for gamers with some of the things they do, but its instances like this that shows they don’t really care about keeping their word to the consumer but instead are looking for the quick pay day that PlayStation Plus provides.
“[PlayStation] Plus premium game elements, mentioned in the T&Cs, do not refer to DLC,” explained Thorpe. “The Private Members Club in PlayStation Home is an example of a premium game element … they will expire if your Plus subscription expires.
“Add-ons are separate to premium game elements.
“In the original blog post,” he added, “I was using the phrase ‘add-ons’ to refer to extra content including DLC. Currently, add-ons do not expire when the subscription expires
“Premium game elements and add-ons are not part of the core monthly content, I apologies again if my post during the launch of Plus was incorrect, I’m afraid this was just an honest mistake during the hectic launch period of Plus.”
Honest mistake or not — man up Sony and give it up for the people. Do the right thing. Change is good and yes, you can.
