David Jaffe is never afraid to express how he feels about certain topics in gaming or how he feels about his own work via Twitter and that trend continued yesterday. Jaffe explains how a lot of people are hoping for a level up ranking system in Twisted Metal similar to that of the first-person giant, Modern Warfare 2. However, he’s not too sure that an experience system is something positive for gaming and that it may take away from the “core experience.”
“So it seems there are LOTS of peps who want leveling up and unlocking for the new Twisted Metal. Fair enough. We may do this (still deciding aspects of that system). BUT for me I find it very interesting that key reasons people bring up for wanting it are things like ’so I don’t get bored’, ‘pushes me to keep playing beyond the first month’, ‘I like to collect things’, etc,” states Jaffe.
“To me it seems like they are saying, ‘I like chess but it’s be better if I could rank up and earn new pieces’. That may be the case but to me it dilutes the fun of trying to outthink your opponent and stay 2-5 steps ahead because you now have this higher/meta goal that can take your focus from the core experience.”
“I get 100% why people love it and I get how it’s good business in many ways to include it. Just trying to decide if it ends up hurting the core game at a fundamental level,” he explained.
Personally, I agree with Jaffe and believe that the leveling system that some games provide not only take away from the enjoyment of the game itself, but creates a disadvantage for new players trying to enjoy the game as well. Would you guys like to see a leveling system within TM or no?
No. I want Twisted Metal online to be Twisted Metal not Modern Warfare (camp to get personal goal and ruin the experience). All vehicles should be available to everyone. There shouldn’t be perks or boosters to increase status/abilities(worst thing introduce to gaming). The only stats that should matter are the vehicle stats(just like previous games). I’ve been playing TM since the beginning and I don’t want to see the game change just to appeal the kiddies of the gaming world. TM online mode should be just like it use to be when you played split screen with/against your brother years ago. Skill was the name of the game and it should stay that way.
HELL NO. TM is about the gameplay, not crappy levels or perks. I want to be able to jump into a match without worrying about customization or without the need to check how much XP I need to reach the next level.
Yea I tweeted him about that and I think only do a level system that unlocks things if it works and makes the game, the game. Do what the team wants and feels like the game they want to create. Adding things that they are unsure of could make less put together.
@jeff
“I want to be able to jump into a match without worrying about customization or without the need to check how much XP I need to reach the next level” Me too. Just like the good old days.
It should really be like warhawk. There are ranks yeah, but no perks.
Each time you get to a new rank you get a new insignia to denote that rank and some new outifts to customize your character.
This way we get the fun of “leveling” up without hurting the core game with perks.
i like it. hopefully he trusts his instincts
HELL NO!
I agree with Dreamer_Lion
You should be able to unlock things that customize your character or car, not things like more powerful weapons or perks. This way you can still have different loadouts and looks but it won’t make it harder for newbs.
i agree complety.games with leveling systems like warhak and …halo are much more fun to start.
it sucks to start in games like that when you play online online.
i only start to injoy it after i spend way to much time leveling up too have actual fun
i’ll be pretty pissed if when i play twisted metal online and all i have is 3 cars and a shitty mashine gun wile somone ealce has more cars, rockets, bosters, ect….
